Fall is here! Days are shorter, the nights are cooler and the trees are turning. Now is the time to make sure the pool is ready for closing. Depending on the region, this can mean a number of steps physically and chemically need to be done. SeaKlear® and AquaPill® have some new products that can make the chemical steps quicker and easier - these products will ensure a trouble free opening next spring.
Physical steps of closing will involve cleaning the filter, turning timers down, partial draining and plugging of skimmers and exposed inlets or returns. In areas of hard freezes equipment may be moved indoors for storage and anti-freeze put in the plumbing lines.
However the first and most important steps will be the water treatment. First the chlorine needs to be added to at least 1-3ppm. You may choose to super-chlorinate and let the chlorine level come down. However in the cool months 1 to 3 ppm of chlorine should be plenty to last through the winter. Next add 1 quart per 10,000 gallons of SeaKlear Free and Klear. SeaKlear Free and Klear lowers phosphates, adds enzymes that work to break down oils, and the natural clarifier removes any excess organics. Adding SeaKlear Free and Klear before cleaning and shutting down the filtration system ensures the water will be in the purest form possible prior to closing. With lower phosphate levels and oils and organics removed, the pool will have significantly less contaminant at opening time.
After adding SeaKlear Free & Klear, run the filter for 8 hours and, within 24 hours, add 1 quart per 10,000 gallons of SeaKlear 90 Day Algae Prevention and Remover. This broad spectrum algae killer and preventer makes a great winter algaecide as it’s time and effectiveness increase in cooler water. With SeaKlear Algae Prevention and Remover, you can expect at least 6 months of algae protection.
For extra added security and protection from spring-time algae use the AquaPill WinterPill. This simple device is a round floating ”pill“ that is pierced and then placed under the cover. The WinterPill slowly releases an algae preventing enzyme formula that last for up to 6 months. At spring opening use the AquaPill SpringPill to ensure a trouble-free spring opening and a quicker start to the swim season.
An effective closing routine:
- Raise chlorine to level between 1 to 3 ppm
- Add 1 quart per 10,000 gallons of SeaKlear Free and Klear
- Wait 24 hours then follow with 1 quart per 10,000 gallons of SeaKlear 90 Day Algae Prevention and Remover
- For extra protection, add AquaPill WinterPill prior to covering the pool
- Use AquaPill Spring Pill when the pool is first opened in the spring
It's as simple as that to ensure clean, trouble-free water throughout the winter and at spring opening.
